Vieste is the pearl of the Gargano, with a white old town on a headland, sandy beaches and cliffs with sea caves. It is the ideal base for the Umbra Forest and for the trabucchi, the old fishing machines.
Practical tips
- In summer the beaches are very crowded: the coves to the south are quieter.
- The Gargano roads are winding: use the boats from Vieste to the Tremiti Islands.
- Try fresh fish and cavatelli with turnip tops.
When to go
From June to September for the sea; May and September are the ideal months.
