Venice is discovered on foot and by boat, among alleys, canals and lagoon islands. Beyond St Mark’s there are Murano and its glass, Burano and its coloured houses, and quiet corners away from the crowds.
Practical tips
- On some days an access fee is required to enter the city: check the city council website.
- Go out early in the morning or in the evening, when the alleys are quieter.
- During high water follow the routes with raised walkways.
When to go
Spring and autumn are ideal; winter is atmospheric and quieter.
