The Loire Valley is the garden of France: Renaissance châteaux, parks, vineyards and small towns along the river. It is a UNESCO site, easy to tour by car, by bike or on an organised trip from Tours or Paris.
Not to be missed
- The Château de Chambord and its double-helix staircase
- Chenonceau, the château built over the river
- The gardens of Villandry
- Amboise and Clos Lucé, Leonardo da Vinci’s last home
- The wine cellars of Vouvray and Saumur
Practical tips
- The châteaux are far apart: two or three a day are enough.
- The “Loire by bike” cycle route is easy and well signposted.
- From Paris it can be done in a day on an organised tour.
When to go
April to October; in spring and summer the gardens are at their best.
