Trapani is a city on the sea, between pink salt pans and the medieval rock of Erice. From here the ferries leave for the Egadi Islands, and its food joins fish and Arab influences, such as couscous.
Practical tips
- Fish couscous is the signature dish: in September the Cous Cous Fest takes place at nearby San Vito Lo Capo.
- The salt pans are prettiest at dawn or sunset, with pink light.
- For the Egadi book the ferry in advance in summer.
When to go
From May to October; the sunset over the salt pans is spectacular in every season.
