Stresa is a Belle Époque town on Lake Maggiore, with grand hotels, a flowered lakefront and the departure for the Borromean Islands. A cable car climbs to Mottarone, with a view of seven lakes and the Alps.
Practical tips
- Boats to the islands leave every few minutes from the lakefront: buy a ticket for several islands.
- The islands are prettiest in the morning, with fewer crowds.
- If the weather is overcast, the ride up Mottarone can be cloudy: check the view first.
When to go
From April to October; May for the blooms, September for the steadier weather.
