Siena is a medieval city of stone and red brick, built around the shell-shaped Piazza del Campo. With the Duomo and the Palio, it is one of the loveliest stops in Tuscany.
Practical tips
- The Palio is run on 2 July and 16 August: book far in advance if you want to be there.
- Try pici, panforte and ricciarelli.
- A combined ticket for the Duomo also includes the Library, Baptistery and Museum.
When to go
Spring and autumn are the best seasons; July and August are hot and crowded, especially on Palio days.
