Provence at a glance

Provence is the land of lavender, stone villages and open-air markets. Between Avignon, Arles and the Luberon you find Roman monuments, vineyards and landscapes that inspired great painters.

Not to be missed

  1. The lavender fields of Valensole and Sénanque Abbey
  2. The Luberon villages: Gordes, Roussillon and Lourmarin
  3. Avignon and the Palace of the Popes
  4. The Pont du Gard and the Roman monuments of Arles
  5. The Calanques of Marseille, by boat or on foot

Practical tips

  • To tour the villages choose a trip with a driver: they are far apart.
  • Morning markets are the heart of local life: go early.
  • In summer access to some Calanques may be limited: check first.

When to go

Lavender blooms from late June to late July; spring and autumn are ideal for visiting.
