Pompeii is the Roman city buried by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD, kept almost intact under the ash. A walk among streets, houses, baths and frescoes gives a unique view of everyday life of the ancients.
Practical tips
- Bring water, a hat and comfortable shoes: there is little shade.
- The site is large: allow at least three hours, ideally with an audio guide.
- Book your entry online in summer to avoid queues at the ticket office.
When to go
Spring and autumn; in summer visit early in the morning, when it is less hot.
