Herculaneum is the Roman city buried by Vesuvius in 79 AD together with Pompeii, but preserved even better thanks to the volcanic material that covered it. It can be visited in half a day and is less crowded than the Pompeii excavations.
Practical tips
- The Herculaneum site is smaller than Pompeii: two hours are enough.
- From the Circumvesuviana station Ercolano Scavi the site is a few minutes on foot.
- Combine Herculaneum with Vesuvius on the same day.
